Texas turned blue.

Elon Musk was the 2026 midterms' largest donor. He's already one of its biggest losers.

Musk, the world's richest person, donated at least $446 million ahead of the midterms. The biggest recipients of Musk's largesse were America PAC, his super PAC, and the top super PACs of Senate and House Republicans.

Musk chose to make his biggest play in Texas, his adopted home state and the headquarters of Tesla and SpaceX. In September alone, Musk donated $158 million to Senate Republicans' main super PAC, which was quickly routed to a super PAC supporting GOP candidate and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. In addition to those donations, Musk's America PAC has spent over $47 million against Democratic nominee James Talarico. All told, The New York Times reported that Musk spent roughly $224 million in the state.

As of late Tuesday night, The Associated Press has already projected that Talarico will be Texas' next senator and that state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, also a Democrat, will be the state's next governor. Democrats' decadeslong dream — and Musk's nightmare — came true: Texas is blue.

Talarico, who had increasingly targeted Musk, compared his victory to the biblical tale of David defeating Goliath.

"The richest man in the world, the most powerful man in the world, and the entire Washington D.C. establishment," Talarico said during his victory speech. "David wasn't as big or as strong as Goliath. He didn't have as many weapons, but he had hope. He had faith, and he had a slingshot."

Musk's bets reflect his statements that the midterms offered Republicans a chance to build up a defense to Democrats potentially sweeping control of Washington in 2028. In such a scenario, Musk said he is worried that Democrats will grant Washington, DC and Puerto Rico statehood and push far-left policies like offering legalization to people living in the country illegally.

"This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word," Musk wrote on X on October 30.

Once an Obama supporter, Musk has swung hard to the right in recent years. He has quickly surpassed the Koch brothers, Elizabeth and Richard Uihlein, and other megadonors to become the biggest spender in the GOP.

Musk has also indicated that he's aware Democrats are eager to haul him in front of Congress.

"Live by the sword, die by the sword," Musk wrote on X in October. "Those who pick fights with me should understand that I will find out who is really pulling the strings and come for them, not just their puppets …"

Musk's ROI has been mixed

In the 2024 elections, Musk spent more than $290 million, the vast majority of which was directed to helping President Donald Trump retake the White House.

For his efforts, Musk later became the effective leader of the White House DOGE office. In early 2025, DOGE's sweeping mandate helped make him one of the most powerful people in the entire government.

Musk returned to the campaign trail in 2025, spending over $20 million between himself and allied super PACs on a Wisconsin state Supreme Court election. He even donned one of the Green Bay Packers' famous cheeseheads. This time, Musk's spending wasn't enough. His favored candidate lost by more than 10 points.

Musk's midterm spending has confirmed his continued support for Republicans, something he briefly threw into question during his falling-out with President Donald Trump. In June 2025, Musk threatened to create a third party, called the America Party, but never seriously followed through on his plans.

He won't have to wait long for his next opportunity. Few races are more tantalizing for donors than presidential elections. History also shows that a big donor (even one with fewer zeros in their net worth) can keep a struggling candidate afloat long after it appears their campaign is dead in the water.

Now that the midterms are wrapped up, the 2028 presidential primaries are around the corner. Musk may want to get his checkbook ready.

Read the original article on Business Insider

You're practicing being a founder, and so the moment you found a company is probably not the first time you try to make something," Chesky said.

He said he had been developing the instincts of a founder since childhood, from designing and taking apart toys to persuading friends to buy what he was selling.

But when he suddenly had to become a CEO, he said he found the role "counterintuitive."

Here are the three mistakes Chesky said he made:

1. Deferring to more experienced executives

Chesky said that as a CEO, he was often advised to hire highly experienced executives and get out of their way.

He said he later came to see how that approach isn't the best for a young company: "You've got to hire people just a little bit ahead of you that are smart, hungry, and you got to stay really close to them."

Chesky said he also often ignored his own instincts in favor of listening to executives with far more experience than he did, who were often much older than he was.

"The hard part for me was sometimes my intuition would tell me one thing, and they'd tell me another. And what do I do when my intuition and their experience collide? Usually I deferred, and that was usually a mistake," Chesky said.

He said that those executives who came from much larger companies often struggled to apply what had worked at a larger business to the demands of a smaller startup.

"They also come from companies where they didn't build it. They managed it. And now they have to build it," Chesky said.

2. Being a people pleaser

Chesky said he found it difficult to hold colleagues accountable when their work fell short.

He said he struggled with knowing "when to tell people what to do" and had trouble having hard conversations about an employee's performance. He was "conflict-averse to the point that if somebody wasn't working out, I would not take action," he said.

"I felt cautious about being a boss," Chesky said. "I think I was a little bit of a people pleaser. I wanted people to like me."

He said he sometimes took on employees' work himself, without realizing he might either be failing to give them enough room to succeed or be propping them up in an unsustainable way.

3. Not saying "No" enough

Another mistake Chesky said he made was not saying "No" enough, which left the company without a clear focus.

He compared executives pursuing competing priorities to passengers in a car who all want to go somewhere else.

"The right way is one way. And one way has to be your way," Chesky said.

He said that if an executive takes a team in a direction the CEO does not believe in, the company could be left dealing with the consequences long after that person leaves.

"They've gone down a path for two years. Guess what happens? They leave. You might spend five or 10 years fixing or correcting that decision that person made," Chesky said.

Read the original article on Business Insider

This gave them the idea to start a business in the legal tech space.

"I saw that there was a lot of money being invested in the big firms like Harvey and Legora, so that's when I realized there was actually a market for this," Teng said.

Harvey, one of the most prominent legal AI startups, has conducted several funding rounds over the past year and announced a valuation of $15.5 billion in September. Legora announced a $550 million Series D round in March, at a $5.55 billion valuation.

Lim and Teng launched the company in November — finals season for both of them — with 2,500 Singapore dollars, or about $1,950, from SMU's entrepreneurship incubation program. They brought on 10 team members, all college students, and kickstarted Jam & Raph.

Their product: Running workshops for law firms to teach lawyers how to use AI tools effectively and token-efficiently. They also started offering consultations to the firms, helping them build AI products tailored to their needs.

Their workshops, which are two to three hours long, cost SG$2,000 to SG$3,000, and they charge SG$120 per hour for consultations.

They poured a little of their savings into the venture — less than $2,000 combined — but operating expenses are low, mainly their $150 monthly Claude subscriptions and email domain fees. They say they've stuck all their revenue in their company bank account for now, not paying themselves anything.

Putting out fires during finals week

Despite studying in Singapore, a country that is infamous for its rigorous and competitive academic culture, both Teng and Lim said that working on the business always takes precedence over their studies.

"My GPA took a total hit, but I think that's just the cost of doing a startup when you are in university, so that is to be expected," Lim said.

Teng said he's seen his grades improve in classes that blend tech and law. His core law classes have taken a hit, but that hasn't phased him.

"I think Singapore still places a lot of emphasis on academics, but the more we talk to people and clients outside Singapore, like Americans or Europeans, they care more about your story," he said.

But problems always seem to arise at the most inconvenient times, they said, like clients calling them about product failures during their final weeks, when they have to study for multiple exams.

It's also taken a toll on their social lives.

"We've had clients sending emails saying, 'Hey, your product is down,' while we're having drinks with friends, and we have to immediately deal with it," Lim said.

Lim said that he's missed out on a large part of the freshman college experience.

"Everyone was out partying and joining clubs, meeting new people, and I would be cooped up in my room, coding," he said.

He added that his ex-partner got angry at him when he didn't answer the phone all day while he was solving a technical issue for their product, and then had to complete schoolwork.

The duo doesn't meet to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or play video games anymore, either, and their hangouts are all about work.

It's better to fail in college

For Teng, it was an opportunity to test out entrepreneurship in a safe space before entering the workforce.

"It's okay to fail because if you fail as a student startup founder, I think it's pretty expected; there's no real heat that you can get in terms of responsibilities," he said, adding that people are a lot warmer toward student entrepreneurs.

Lim said running a business is a good window to the world outside the classroom.

"My peers will be doing a lot of academics, research theory, but I get to see how these theories actually apply in the real world," he said.

Neither of them sees this as a replacement for a postgrad job hunt, though, with both saying that they want to get corporate work experience.

"It was more of a 'good to have,' something we built for the love of the game to bring something to the world," Lim said.

Read the original article on Business Insider

CLARY / AFP via Getty Images

Early midterm election results show a huge Democratic surge across the country.

Delighted X posters are now semi-jokingly declaring that DEI is so back.

A leftward political shift could reignite DEI focus in companies, reversing previous trends.

If early election night results are any barometer, it might be time for everyone to get more woke.

So far, polls across the country show a likely blue tsunami, with traditional Republican strongholds chipped away at — or even flipped — by Democrats. Jon Ossoff won reelection in Georgia handily; South Carolina's Senate seat flipped to blue; and Democrat James Talarico is projected to be Texas' next senator.

The internet has come to its own (somewhat joking) conclusion: DEI is so back. Delighted X users spent the evening joking that pronouns will return to email signatures, whether workers like it or not.

"YOU HAVE TWELVE HOURS TO PLACE THE PRONOUNS BACK IN YOUR EMAIL OR YOU WILL BE REPORTED," one X post read. Another joked that should Democrats win 53 or more Senate seats, pronouns would have to return to email signatures. New York City Council member Chi Ossé wrote "PRONOUNS BACK IN BIOS NOW" in response to favorable projections for Texas Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico. And yet another X post declared that there would be a new gender with every seat Democrats won.

Of course, these are flippant meme fodder, but they get at a potential vibe shift. In the wake of President Donald Trump's 2024 victory, both the federal government and, in turn, companies across the economy cracked down on DEI initiatives.

Some firms did indeed tell workers to remove their pronouns from their email signatures; others publicly pulled back on DEI initiatives and goals, leaving some workers feeling disheartened and others affirmed. Overall, it was a rapid about-face from 2020-era rhetoric and initiatives that centered on racial equity and inclusion, and a pivot that many companies embraced in an effort to not attract the ire of Trump and the federal government.

Now, though, the political landscape has been thrown into another seismic shift with the apparent leftward turn in the midterms. For the firms that have stuck with their DEI initiatives, that might be welcome news, as voters embrace a new group of leaders. And, of course, DEI never fully went away: Many companies still quietly embraced diverse hiring practices, but shirked away from the term.

There's also always the possibility that the likely Democratic gains lead to new innovation; as one X poster wrote, "We're doing double pronouns now!"

Read the original article on Business Insider

A change in House control would give Democrats a perch to conduct robust oversight of the administration for its final two years.

Republicans currently hold 218 seats in the House and Democrats have 214. (There is one vacancy in a Republican seat, one vacancy in a Democratic seat and one Republican member switched his party affiliation to independent). Democrats need to flip just three seats to gain control of the House, something they are expected to do easily.

As the head of product for Claude Code, Wu served as one of the two top leaders and evangelists for the technology alongside its original creator, Boris Cherny.

Claude Code, under Wu and Cherny's leadership, turned into one of the most important products in the AI industry's history. The tech gave Anthropic the viral product it needed to boost its revenues and access more funding for compute, and it turned the company into a bigger rival for OpenAI.

Wu did not say what prompted her departure and did not immediately respond to requests for comment. She's leaving at a crucial moment for Anthropic, as it churns toward a gargantuan initial public offering later this month. The company confirmed her departure. Thariq Shihipar, who also worked on Claude Code, announced his own departure last month.

Wu joined Anthropic in summer 2024 and tested an early prototype of Claude Code. In Tuesday's post, she reminisced on that moment: "It worked, I was hooked, and I joined the team."

Anthropic released the tool in research preview in February 2025, announcing it in a brief demo video that featured Wu and Cherny.

The two decamped to AI coding startup Cursor that summer, and then returned to Anthropic a couple of weeks later, The Information reported.

Wu and Cherny then oversaw Claude Code's meteoric rise, which ramped up at the end of 2025. The tool first grew popular as an automatic coder for software engineers, who suddenly had a product that could sprint through entire coding tasks. Tech giants' AI bills with Anthropic soared as more developers started burning through Claude tokens.

Wu also oversees Cowork, Anthropic's tool for non-coding work, which relies on the same AI models and handles knowledge work for non-software engineers.

In an interview on Lenny's Podcast in April, Wu described her role as figuring out the path to bring Claude Code to the "AGI-pilled" version that Cherny envisioned for the future — a reference to the industry term "artificial general intelligence."

In her role, Wu said she worked with marketing, sales, finance, and other teams, and hired some of Anthropic's product managers. She also regularly responded to user requests about Claude Code on social media.

One commenter wrote under her X post on Tuesday, "Are you gonna take that 6 months vacations now?"

Wu answered: "post agi!"

Have a tip? And while their spending drew widespread attention, a new analysis by POLITICO — which, like Business Insider, is part of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network — offers a more revealing look at their party affiliations and voting habits.

Some have made their politics abundantly clear.

Tom Steyer, the billionaire philanthropist, attempted this year to buy his way to the governor's mansion with an ultimately unsuccessful $200-plus million primary campaign.

SEIU-UHW's pursuit of Proposition 40, a one-time tax on the state's wealthiest residents, put billionaires on the ballot explicitly, prompting a more than $300 million opposition campaign led by Sergey Brin, one of the world's richest men, who is now positioned to act as a political powerbroker for years to come.

A separate billionaire, surgeon and inventor Gary Michelson, spent tens of millions of his personal fortune to promote his own measure, an immunology bond that would direct billions to an institute that he co-founded. Across the entire ballot, current and former California billionaires have spent a record $612 million on this year's state election.

For years, the country's richest people have wielded a growing influence on the direction and outcome of its politics. In California, this year has supercharged that trendline. But who, in fact, are they?

More than 250 billionaires call California home — or have until recently — according to Forbes. POLITICO was able to match 166 of those individuals with the state's voter file, offering new insights into their make-up, political leanings and voting propensity.

Many of the state's billionaires' names are familiar to the average voter, representing the state's major industries of entertainment and tech — music icons like Dr. Dre and Rihanna, reality TV stars like Kim Kardashian as well as Silicon Valley tech moguls like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Anthropic founder Dario Amodei and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt (not to be confused with Eric Smidt, the billionaire CEO of Harbor Freight tools).

Others run their businesses in relative anonymity — Donald Friese, the former owner of a glass and glazing products company, and James Scapa, the founder of a software firm Altair Engineering, are unlikely to turn many heads when they walk down the street.

According to POLITICO's analysis, registered Democrats outnumbered Republicans among the billionaires we identified to the California voter file, despite the number of industrial titans who have visited the White House and extended olive branches to President Donald Trump.

"Voters probably think there are more Republicans" among California's billionaire class, said Paul Mitchell, a Democratic leading political data expert in California. "That's more recency bias when you see all the tech elites around the table with Trump."

Republican consultant Mike Murphy said the numbers challenge the assumption that wealthy people are overwhelmingly Republican.

"The old model of politics equates wealth with Republican so people probably assume they've all got to be Republican if they're billionaires," he said, "and I think the data shows it's more complex than that."

Zuckerberg, who has met with Trump on a number occasions and has undergone what some have termed a "MAGA-makeover," was listed as a registered Democrat, according to voter-file data the Secretary of State's office provided in early September. Amodei, another frequent guest of the White House, was also listed as a registered Democrat, as was his AI rival, Sam Altman. Headlining California's class of Republican billionaires that POLITICO identified in the voter file are former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Golden State Warriors and Golden State Valkyries owner Joe Lacob and Trump mega donor and tech entrepreneur Palmer Luckey.

But the billionaires were still less Democratic than their state's overall electorate (36% of the billionaires POLITICO matched to the voter file, compared to 45% of the statewide electorate). And they were more likely to have no party preference (39%, compared to 23% of voters statewide). Mitchell said that could reflect a prevailing disdain for the two-party political system.

"One train of thought for a (no-party-preference voter) is: 'I don't know anything about politics, I don't care, I'm just independent.' The other is: 'I'm smarter than these parties, I know what I want,'" Mitchell said. "I'm sure a lot of these billionaires fit into that camp."

Unsurprisingly, Los Angeles and San Francisco are the clear geographic centers of power among the billionaire set. More than 30 people were registered in San Francisco itself and another 15 in Los Angeles, with dozens more in the surrounding cities and suburbs. At least a quarter were born in the state, followed by 8% in New York, and at least 19% in other countries.

While billionaires have seized an outsized role in the state's politics this year, they are also generally high-propensity voters. More than 60% of the billionaires in our dataset voted in each of the last three presidential elections, a higher share than the statewide electorate in both 2024 and 2016. But although generally more engaged than the average voter, just 54% voted in last November's special election and an even lower 51% in the 2024 presidential primaries.

At least some billionaires have already attempted to flee California over the wealth tax. If Prop 40 passes, opponents say, they may not be the last.

This story originally appeared on POLITICO and is courtesy of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network, which harnesses the resources of the company's newsrooms to publish ambitious scoops, investigations, interviews, opinion pieces, and analysis. The company hasn't said how many will be cut.

Canva has announced a major restructuring.

On Tuesday, the design software company's CEO, Melanie Perkins, published a memo sent to employees titled "An important update on our team." In it, she said that 1,271 employees, roughly 22% of the workforce, will be affected by a reorganization. Some employees will see their roles change or relocate, she said, while others will lose their jobs.

It comes after Canva lowered its growth expectations. In August, the company changed its 2026 revenue growth forecast from 30% to 20%. In Tuesday's memo, Perkins said that this year has been the company's "hardest year yet" and that "growth has slowed for the first time in a decade."

Canva has also faced fresh competition from AI tools, including OpenAI's and Google's image-generating models.

Read the memo:
Hi everyone,Today, I have some profoundly difficult news to share. After months of thinking through how to set Canva up for the next chapter, we have made the incredibly hard decision to make significant changes to how we're organised, where some of our teams are based, and the roles and skills we need for the future. This means 1,271 people, or 22% of Canva, will be impacted. For some people, this will mean changes to their roles or being asked to relocate to centralised hubs. Sadly, it will also mean saying goodbye to teammates and friends who have helped build Canva into what it is today. This is without doubt the hardest moment in our thirteen-year history. Behind every decision is someone we care deeply about, and I know the consequences will be very real for those directly affected, their families, friends and teammates.I'm deeply sorry for the pain and disruption this will cause for everyone affected. While nothing can make this news easier, we will do everything we possibly can to support everyone affected. I want to explain as openly as I can why we're making these changes, how we reached these decisions, and, most importantly, how we will care for the people affected today.
Why we're making these changes
We've spoken a lot about how quickly the world is changing. New technology is transforming what people can create, how they create it, and what they expect from the products they use.Over the past thirteen years, we've turned a dream in a pitch deck into a platform used by hundreds of millions of people. None of it would have been possible without the talent, imagination and care of every single person who has been part of this journey. Yet success in our first chapter doesn't guarantee success in the next. This has been our hardest year yet, and as we shared earlier this year, our growth has slowed for the first time in a decade. After exploring a wide range of alternatives, I've come to the difficult conclusion that small changes won't be enough. To set ourselves up for the next decade, we need to refound Canva, getting back to our roots of small, empowered teams with the freedom to make decisions, take ownership and focus on what matters most for our community. It also means making some of the hardest decisions we've ever faced, including saying goodbye to people who have helped make Canva what it is today. For that, I am deeply sorry.
What we're changing
We're making three changes to bring more of what has made Canva special back into how we work.#1. We're simplifying how we come together to build CanvaAs we've grown, more of our work has become organised around team structures and narrow areas of ownership. Improving one part of our product often requires navigating between Product, Growth and Platform, with more handovers and coordination than necessary. This has made it harder to take ownership of bigger problems and to build a deeply unified product for our community. We've tried many ways to solve this over the years, but it's become clear we need to revisit our underlying structure. To do that, we're bringing Product, Growth and Platform together into one Product Org and changing the way we work to provide clearer ownership, greater autonomy and flexibility to tackle our most important goals. We want to get back to spending more time building, and less time navigating how work gets done.#2. We're reducing subspecialisation and collapsing layers to broaden ownershipOver time, we've divided work across more and more subspecialties and teams. While this has helped us build valuable expertise, it's also fragmented ownership and made it harder to see the full picture, with different teams responsible for many pieces of the same work. We're reducing this fragmentation and incorporating narrower subspecialties into broader roles so teams have more ownership of goals from start to finish. We're also simplifying layers, consolidating overlapping responsibilities, and ensuring teams have the right mix of skills and experience for the chapter ahead.#3. We're co-locating closely connected teams and increasing in-person collaborationWorking across countries has brought enormous benefits and talent, but it's also made it harder to bring the right people together to solve complex problems. We'll continue investing in our global team, particularly where being close to our community, customers and markets matters most.At the same time, Sydney will become the primary home for more of our product teams, as well as roles in other Specialties where shared context and close collaboration are especially important. We know relocating is a big decision for those being asked to consider it, and we're committed to making the process as smooth as possible with comprehensive support. We also want to bring more teams together in person to build trust, learn from one another and strengthen the connections that make Canva special. From January, we expect most Hybrid Canvanauts to spend around 2 to 3 days in the office each week, depending on what makes sense in your area.
How we approached these decisions
I know many of you will have questions about how we made these decisions. We began with one question: what does Canva need to do to succeed in the chapter ahead? We started with our mission and future goals, then considered the structures, skills and locations needed to achieve them. Only then did we look at what this would mean for individual roles. While understanding how we reached these decisions won't make them any less painful, I want to emphasise that they are not a reflection of the talent, care and dedication people have brought to Canva, their skills or the enormous contributions they've made along the way.
Supporting those who are leaving
We know everyone's circumstances are different, and while nothing can make today's news easy, we've tried to reflect those different needs in the financial, career and wellbeing support we're providing to everyone affected:

Everyone will receive at least six months of salary, inclusive of statutory entitlements, regardless of location.

Removing the one-year vesting cliff for those who joined in the past year.

Twelve months of continued healthcare coverage in countries where we currently provide this.

Twelve months of Canva Care (our EAP), with this coverage also extending to family members.

Dedicated career support, including one-on-one coaching, interview preparation, and one year of LinkedIn Premium. We're also dedicating a significant portion of our Talent Acquisition team to helping people review their resumes and practice for interviews to find their next opportunity.

An opt-in alumni talent directory that we'll proactively share with our investors, partners, and wider industry network to help connect departing Canvanauts with new roles.

Everyone leaving will be able to keep their Canva MacBook as we know not everyone has a personal laptop.

We're also launching the Canva Collective Fund, providing US$10,000 grants to departing Canvanauts who want to start something of their own. Whether it's starting a business or doing something meaningful for their local community, the fund is designed to help get those ideas off the ground. Everyone leaving as part of these changes will have until the 14 of December to register their interest, and we won't take any ownership or equity in what they create.
What happens next
Our immediate priority is to make time for the conversations with everyone directly impacted by these changes. Those impacted will receive a calendar invite for an individual meeting with a senior leader in their area to discuss the next steps and support available should they wish to attend. With teams across 37 countries, we'll need to follow different local requirements and processes, which means the timing and way these conversations happen may vary depending on where people are based. We also want to give everyone the time to process this news and say goodbye in their own way. Everyone leaving Canva will continue to have access to Slack and Gmail until the end of the week, so they can choose when and how to share the news with their teams. This means you may not know exactly how your team is changing straight away, and we ask everyone to respect the privacy of those having these conversations. Leads will share more about the changes to different areas by the end of the week. We've put together some answers to common questions and everything you need to know. There's no need to read through everything right now, but we hope they'll be helpful whenever you're ready. Next week, we'll come together for a Company All Hands on November 10th to talk through these changes, answer questions, and share more about the path ahead. We've asked Org Leads to wait until after this to bring their teams together, with Org All Hands taking place from November 11th.To everyone continuing at Canva: I know this news will be incredibly difficult, especially as we say goodbye to friends and teammates who have been such an important part of our journey. Please look after yourselves and one another and be there for those who are leaving. We're also cancelling non-critical meetings for the rest of the week, and encourage anyone who needs some time and space to process this news to take the day off. There's no need to log this as leave. To those who will be leaving Canva: I wish I could adequately express how grateful I am for everything you've contributed. The Canva that exists today is the result of your hard work, creativity, passion and care. Hundreds of millions of people around the world have been empowered by what you've helped build, and I hope you know just how much of a difference you've made. I am deeply sorry this is how your chapter at Canva is ending. Please know these decisions do not diminish your talent, the value of your contributions, or the difference you've made here. We will do everything we can to support you in what comes next, and I hope the work we do from here will be worthy of what you've helped build.Mel
Read the original article on Business Insider

He considered her the "perfect teammate," attentive and receptive to feedback.

"She didn't come out of school acting like she knew everything, or that anything that we were doing wasn't interesting to her," Suttles told Business Insider. "In the nursing world, where you don't have anybody but your teammates, it's good to have good ones."

Reed described her career as spanning "diverse industries, including real estate, critical care nursing, and aesthetics" on LinkedIn.

She owned BrowBabe, an Oklahoma City microblading studio. After they worked together as nurses, Pyle said that she connected her mother with Reed for services. She "made people feel welcomed," Pyle said.

The Oklahoma City shop is now operated by Cassandra Barnes. In an Instagram post, Barnes called Reed the "original BrowBabe," explaining that she was a friend and mentor who introduced her to the world of makeup.

"A piece of her will always live on in the work I do and the passion I have for this industry," Barnes wrote.

A traveler's love story

Reed was an adventure-seeker, hiking to waterfalls and scuba diving. In 2021, she linked her globe-trotting back to another business line: real estate. "Buying a house like this is literally what opened up my world of traveling," she wrote on her sister's home listing.

The couple also renovated and sold an Oklahoma City house in 2021, and considered selling another one of her Oklahoma properties in June.

Travel also brought Reed and Fehr together. In 2019, Reed was traveling solo in Peru, according to travel blogger Madison Krigbaum, who visited the property. Reed met Fehr, who was also visiting the South American country from Paraguay, at a Peruvian hostel, the blogger wrote: "It was love at first sight."

The blogger wrote that Fehr would "later become her fiancé." In an image shared by the families, both Reed and Fehr wear rings on their left hands.

Reed had long been connected to Roatán, an island off the northern coast of Honduras. She first visited in the mid-2000s at age 15. Her mother did nonprofit work and built a school there, according to the travel blog. Reed said that she has traveled to Roatán three to four times a year ever since that first trip.

In November 2019, Reed and Fehr traveled to Roatán with their poodle, Marlie. What was initially meant to be a shorter trip extended with the COVID-19 pandemic. After a period of isolation, the couple got used to island life and made friends with their neighbors. "We take care of each other," she wrote at the time. "We bake bread for one another."

After months of boating, fishing, and meditating, Reed and Fehr returned to the United States after COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted, according to the travel blog. They eventually split time between the US and the island.

Reed loved Roatán deeply. In a video posted to Facebook, their friend Bryon Robbins said that she cared for the island's children and animals alike, chasing after the motorcycle of a man who had abused a dog. They could talk and talk, he said.

"She would make a 50-minute ride to the east end feel like 15 minutes," he said.

The new hoteliers

In 2023, Reed and Fehr established a new kind of connection to the island: a 16-room hotel.

The couple co-owned Arca Boutique Hotel, a beachfront property promising gorgeous views and Caribbean cuisine. A review of the hotel from Wanderluxe said that Reed was "passionate about her adopted second home," personally helping guests book massages and find the island's best bars and restaurants.

The hotel leaned into sustainability; it was "woven into every detail," the hotel said in an Instagram post. Reed and Fehr installed energy-efficient lighting, eliminated single-use straws and food containers, and said they only worked with tour operators who showed a commitment to the island's natural beauty.

Guests seemed to love it. The hotel has a 4.9-star average on TripAdvisor. "Both of the owners were so kind and knew us by name within the first day," one reviewer wrote.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Arca said that Reed and Fehr were far more than the hotel's owners. "They were family," the hotel wrote. "They believed in us, inspired us, and gave us the opportunity to be part of something truly special."

Reed knew as well as anyone else: life can change on a dime, so you have to enjoy every moment.

"I've learned that our plans are really pretty laughable most of the time," she wrote in a pandemic-era blog post. "In the blink of an eye, things can change."

Read the original article on Business Insider
