In an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rivers particularly criticized Antetokounmpo's lack of execution and reliance on bully ball, which he believes makes the Greek superstar difficult to coach.

"He's not easy. He's not easy because he plays at this crazy downhill pace. He's really a difficult guy. I was telling someone this: He has this great passing ability, but he doesn't necessarily have the super IQ at the same time," Rivers said. "It's really a strange thing.

"He really has one way: Downhill, force, force, force. Every play, he wants to force it. There's times where I wish he did one thing, I wish he learned how to execute better."

Doc Rivers' Bucks coach tenure handling Giannis failed miserably

Doc Rivers served as the Milwaukee Bucks' head coach from the middle of the 2023-24 season until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

During that time, he coached Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard in Milwaukee, but their partnership fell short of expectations as they struggled to make the Bucks championship contenders.

Milwaukee was eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs in back-to-back seasons in 2024 and 2025 by the Indiana Pacers. Giannis missed the entire 2024 series due to a calf injury.

As such, last season became the darkest and the closing chapter of Giannis' time in Milwaukee. After dealing with multiple injuries and playing just 36 games, the Bucks missed the NBA Playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

Following the disappointing season, the Greek superstar was eventually traded to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster deal. Rivers, on his own, was dismissed by the Bucks despite having one more year left on his contract.

Rivers ended his Bucks tenure with a disappointing 97-103 record.

"He's one of those guys that you get a lot of from the U.S., AAU guys who have never needed to execute because they can do it on their own, but that doesn't help the team," Rivers further said about Antetokounmpo. "I told Giannis this, I think what he needs to still learn is the value of execution. How important it is when you're in practice and in shootarounds to lock in on execution. Now he has a coach who is as good as there is in execution."

Rivers also pointed out that while Giannis' aggressive playing style works for him, he still needs to focus on execution to help the team play better and win.

"That's good for him. What a lot of players don't know is, yeah, 'I don't need that, I can do that.' Yeah, you can, but for the team to work, you have to learn how to execute," Rivers argued about Giannis.

Giannis is off to a rough start in his new chapter with the Heat. As they are still a work in progress amid inconsistencies and defensive lapses, Miami holds a 3-6 record heading into its 10th game of the season.
