Every morning, the 900 or so people who work at Rockstar North, the storied and highly guarded game studio in Edinburgh, pass an enormous floor-to-ceiling mural in the lobby of their building. Amid an assortment of Rockstar logos and artwork, close to ground level, is a small slogan that reads: 'PARANOIA IS GOOD'. This is a building that has long dealt in secrets. Before Rockstar moved in, it housed The Scotsman newspaper. Once a place devoted to uncovering secrets, it is now devoted to keeping them.

That's because, despite what the series' swaggering Americana might suggest, this is one of the principal places in which Grand Theft Auto VI, the most anticipated video game of the decade, has been made. The secrecy surrounding the game has only sharpened the appetite for it. For years, every scrap of information has been extrapolated from and argued over. To the dismay of its creators, development has also been punctured by extraordinary leaks, including at least one accompanied by threats of blackmail. Here, paranoia is, if not a good thing, at the very least an occupational precaution.
