In space, no one can hear Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt fall in love

Actor Chris Pratt is known for rising to a challenge. He lost 60 pounds before taking on the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, and while on set for the sci-fi thriller Mercy, he requested to be strapped into an executioner's chair for hours at a time to get into the mind of his character. But in an underrated 2016 sci-fi thriller, Pratt grapples with perhaps his biggest character challenge yet: the loneliness of being trapped in space.

Passengers was released in 2016, the same year that NASA's Juno spacecraft successfully entered orbit around Jupiter and astronaut Scott Kelly completed a record-breaking 340-day mission aboard the International Space Station. People were excited about the future of space, and around that same time, Passengers earned $303.8 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Once it left theaters, however, people seemed to quietly forget about it — until now.

Passengers is now free to stream on YouTube

Passengers stars Chris Pratt as Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer, and Jennifer Lawrence as Aurora Lane, a journalist and author. They happen to be two of the people aboard the luxury starship Avalon, which is transporting some 5,000 colonists to their new home — a planet that will take 120 years to reach. Everyone is supposed to be fast asleep in hibernation pods until they arrive at their new home, but of course, that wouldn't make for a very entertaining film. Only 30 years into the voyage, Preston is awakened after an asteroid collision causes his hibernation pod to malfunction. He spends a year in isolation aboard the ship before deciding he's had enough — and, desperate for some companionship, he wakes up Lane. Being the only two passengers awake aboard the spacecraft, the pair slowly but surely fall in love with each other. There's just one major problem that drives a wedge between them: Preston allows Lane to believe that she woke up because of a malfunction in her hibernation pod.

The film poses an interesting question to its audience — faced with a life by yourself in isolation (remember, in space, no one can hear you scream), what would you do if you were in Preston's position? The film's director Morten Tyldum has gone on record saying that "it's both uncomfortable and very human." In an exclusive 2016 interview with Fandango, Tyldum explained, "I don’t think there are a lot of people that would say: 'I would never do what Chris’ character does.' I dare people to say it, because I think they would be lying. I would have done it myself. It’s disturbing because we would have done the same thing."

Tyldum further said that Pratt was the "perfect choice" for the role of Preston. "He’s extraordinarily good at making the audience sympathize and empathize with him, and also put themselves in his place," Tyldum told Fandango.

Passengers, which holds a 30% critics' score and 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, is now available to stream for free on YouTube.
