Nottingham Forest vs Man City preview

After starting the Premier League season with seven straight wins, Manchester City have lost back-to-back league games for the first time since August 2025.

City continue to play with plenty of intensity and quality, though, and were a tad unfortunate to lose 1-0 at home to Brighton last weekend given they dominated the shot count 21-7, racked up an expected-goals figure almost double Brighton's (1.92 to 1) and had 63 touches in Albion's box.

There is still plenty for Enzo Maresca to work on, and the Italian will be particularly keen for his players to cut out some of the defensive errors which have crept into their game.

Brighton's winner at the Etihad last weekend was a good example. Josko Gvardiol did not do enough to cut out Diego Gomez's dangerous cross while Matheus Nunes's hashed clearance gave Yasin Ayari the simplest of finishes.

The Citizens also had some loose moments in Wednesday's 3-2 win at RB Leipzig and it is now seven matches since they last kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 win at Liverpool.

Earlier in the season, City defended impressively in away wins at Porto and Manchester United, and they should have the capacity to keep things tight against Nottingham Forest, who are still searching for their first home goal of the campaign.

Forest had hoped for a major improvement on last season's 16th-placed finish with Oliver Glasner at the helm, but they find themselves in the relegation places and pressure is mounting on the Austrian.

Notoriously trigger-happy Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis went through four managers last season and the ruthless sacking of Vitor Pereira, who steered the Midlands outfit to safety and the Europa League semi-finals, was another reminder that he isn't sentimental.

Glasner will be only too aware of his precarious predicament, but the challenge of taking on a wounded Manchester City looks far from straightforward.

Optimistic Forest fans could point to several metrics which suggest that the team have performed better than results suggest – Forest's xG of 14.6, xG difference of 5.4 and 26 big-chances created all rank in the top five in this season's Premier League.

But anyone who regularly watches them will know that the poor finishing holding them back may not be an immediate fix.

A big chunk of Forest's summer spending went on striker Liam Delap, who cost a club-record fee of £45 million despite scoring just one goal in 28 league games for Chelsea last season.

In fairness to Delap, 16 of his appearances for the Blues came as a substitute, but Forest will need him to discover the scoring touch quickly after scoring once from 24 attempts since his summer switch.

Delap will be desperate to turn things around against City, the club he began his professional career with, but his struggles in front of goal have been a key factor in Forest's poor start.

Underlying statistics aside, Forest are the Premier League's lowest scorers and their lack of a cutting edge could see them fall to a sixth league defeat of the campaign.

Dynamic Doku can demonstrate his quality

Manchester City have a wealth of elite attacking talent including Jeremy Doku, who is looking sharper after an injury-interrupted start to the campaign.

Doku has created more big chances (5) in the Premier League than any City player and Forest could struggle to stop the Belgian providing Erling Haaland with clear-cut chances.
