Rashee Rice files for bankruptcy amid ongoing legal dispute over 2024 Dallas crash

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in Texas, according to court documents.

Rice's paychecks from the Chiefs were being garnished, according to an attorney for a plaintiff in the case, who said the vast lion's share of what Rice owed is still unpaid. That attorney, March Lenahan, told NBC 5 that his client, Kathryn Kuykendall, was seeking a $1 million settlement last year. Lenahan said she suffered multiple injuries when the Uber she was in was struck by Rice's rented Lamborghini. Prosecutors said the Lamborghini was traveling 119 mph moments before impact.

Kuykendall and Rice agreed on a $1 million civil settlement in April 2025. A judge also signed a judgment for Rice to pay Kuykendall the $1 million, plus interest and attorney fees.

Rice has been playing for the Chiefs after being released from Dallas County Jail back in June. Rice's 30-day jail stint is tied to off-field legal troubles related to his March 2024 crash in Dallas on the Central Expressway. He violated his probation, testing positive for THC.

Rice, 26, missed the first six games of the 2025 season after the NFL found he violated its personal conduct policy. The league said Rice caused the crash while driving erratically. Rice missed the start of mandatory minicamp this season while he was in jail.

Rice left the scene of the crash before police arrived, though he later surrendered to an arrest warrant and took responsibility for the collisions in a statement. Rice subsequently pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges in July 2025 for the collision and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation. He was also required to pay the victims’ medical expenses.

Rice is in the final year of his rookie contract. During his first three seasons in Kansas City, he also missed time with a knee injury and helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the 2023 season.
