Everything old is new again with Sony introducing the MDR-3R – USB-C wired headphones – that resemble the original MDR-3 that launched with the first Walkman in 1979.
Almost 50 years later, Sony is re-releasing the product for listeners who are increasingly moving back towards wired headphones because of their simplicity, plug-and-play operation and no charging.
The MDR-3R has adopted the MDR-3’s original design including its blue and orange earpads and recreated its lightweight design and open-ear comfort.
But they’ve added USB-C connectivity along with a built-in microphone and inline remote for calls, to bring it into the modern age.
Sony is also launching an MDR-3R Stranger Things edition with custom packaging and an engraved Stranger Things logo.
This ties the design back to Netflix’s Stranger Things series which was set in the 1980s when the Sony Walkman was our go-to music device.
The Sony MDR-3R will be priced at $89.95 and will be available from mid-November.
The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition will be priced at 99.95 and will be available in early December.
