West Yorkshire Police issues home security warning over door locks

WEST Yorkshire Police is issuing advice over Euro cylinder locks as part of ongoing efforts to improve home security.

The force has warned that most UPVC doors are fitted with these locks, which have become a target for burglars who have developed methods to bypass them.

West Yorkshire Police has taken national leadership on this issue and is working with Secured by Design and industry bodies including the British Standards Institute, the Door & Hardware Federation, and the Master Locksmiths Association.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "There are now ways that you can reduce the opportunity for a euro-cylinder burglary to take place at your home."

The force recommends that all residents aim to meet the TS 007 3-star standard as a minimum when upgrading their locks.

Cylinders meeting the Sold Secure Diamond Standard (SS312) are also recognised nationally for offering high levels of security.

West Yorkshire Police said: "You may also be able to fit sash jammers to your doors, which have also proven to prevent burglaries.

"It's important that you check the warranty for your door first though, in order to ensure that the fitting of additional devices won't negate it."

Residents are encouraged to seek further guidance from their local crime prevention officer.
