A woman is fighting for life in hospital and two others are seriously injured, after a stabbing in Melbourne’s south-east that sent a nearby primary school into lockdown.
Emergency services were called to a home on Woodlee Street in Dandenong at about 11.30am after three people were found with injuries believed to be stab wounds.
A 28-year-old woman is now in hospital with life-threatening injuries, while two men, 26 and 35, are being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said they were still in the early stages of understanding what had happened, with family violence detectives investigating. They said the three people injured were known to each other.
In an update at 3pm, Acting Inspector Rebecca Hall said Dandenong North Primary School, on nearby Cleeland Street, was placed into lockdown following the incident.
“The children were prevented from coming to the street, so they didn’t witness anything,” she said. “Parents have been notified about how to pick up their children.”
The Department of Education confirmed the primary school locked down as a precaution. It said all students and staff who needed it would receive wellbeing support.
Hall said it was too early to confirm many details about the incident, including exactly how the people were known to each other, if a weapon had been recovered and whether the incident happened inside the house on Woodlee Street or outside.
“We’re not looking for any other people involved in this incident, and we don’t have concerns for any other people,” she said.
Woodlee Street remains closed off as of Friday afternoon.
Rena Mirra owns CHD Charisse Hair Designers on David St, around the corner from Woodlee Street.
She said she and two others in the salon heard sirens, before one customer walked down to the site and said that a man was lying on the nature strip and was taken on a stretcher into an ambulance.
Mirra said another client described the scene as “a bit devilish”, with bloodied clothes and other personal belongings strewn across the grass.
Asked if incidents such as this ever happen in the area, she said: “Gosh no. I’ve been here for 45 years, it’s such a great street. I was really taken aback by this, it is a bit scary.”
Anyone who was in the area at the time, who may have dashcam footage or CCTV footage, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
